The State Key Laboratory of Precision Measurement Technology and Instruments is a national – level key laboratory, which was approved by the National Planning Commission in 1990, jointly organized by Tsinghua University(THU) and Tianjin University(TJU), and established and officially opened to the public in 1995. The research of the laboratory covers two national first-level key disciplines and the associated second-class disciplines, i.e., the Instrument Science and Technology (in THU and TJU) and the optical Engineering (in THU). The laboratory has two subdivisions, located in THU and TJU, separately.

The research of the laboratory focuses on Precision Measurement Technology and Instruments, with the emphases on both fundamental and applied aspects. By combining multidisciplinary new knowledge and technologies (such as those in optoelectronics, lasers, electronics, computer science), the laboratory aims to develop new principles and methods of precision measurement and the key technologies in the improvement in instrument science. The research mainly covers the following four areas:

1. Laser and optoelectric measurement technology

2. Sensing and information measurement technology

3. Micro- and Nano- measurement and fabrication technology

4. Quality control in manufacturing technology
